With almost the entire resort open, stable weather and good spring snow conditions, last weekend was a great weekend with lots of activity for everyone and more music than ever in Baqueira Beret.
Friday 25 March saw the start of the second edition of the Polar Sound music festival at the Val d'Aran and Valls d'Àneu ski resort. The event, organised by Fever in direct collaboration with Baqueira Beret and the Naut Aran Town Council, was attended by more than 14,000 people between Friday and Saturday. A large marquee was set up in the Baqueira 1500 car park to host the different artists present, as well as to provide services to all those attending. During the different concerts, throughout the afternoon and part of the night, you could see and hear very important voices in the national music scene such as Izal, Beret, Dani Fernández, Álvaro de Luna, La La Love You, Lérica, Maren, Marlon, Siloé and the dj's Ardiya and Luigii Nieto. Most of those attending the festival enjoyed the snow rather than the music, as there were 160 km of skiable slopes between Baqueira, Beret, Baciver and Bonaigua with more than 2 metres of spring snow at the highest points of the resort.
On Saturday 26th, music was once again the star on the slopes of Baqueira Beret, and not only because it was the second day of the Polar Sound festival, but also because of the emotional tribute paid in Pla de Beret to the singer Pau Donés with "El Valle Grita" (The Valley Screams). An initiative promoted by the Zamora-born musician Mario Carnero, who is passionate about the Val d'Aran and its mountains. More than 1,000 people attended the event to support this project and be part of it in situ. The action consisted of recording a video clip of the song "Grita" by the famous singer of Jarabe de Palo with the assistance of live musicians, families, friends and anyone who wanted to participate. The Orquestra Simfònica de l'Escola de Música de l'Orfeó Lleidatà (Symphony Orchestra of the School of Music of the Orfeó Lleidatà) also took part.
For the complete recording of the video clip, a grand piano was also taken up to 2,300 metres in a helicopter, next to the Cap de Blanhiblar, where beautiful images were captured while the musical piece was being performed. The Conselh Generau d'Aran, the main collaborator of the event, declared: "we are immensely grateful to the promoters of this event, as we believe it was necessary to pay tribute to the figure of Pau Donés, a person who did so much for the Val d'Aran and who left us with a very special memory through his actions and his music". In short, a tribute that fans and music lovers undoubtedly enjoyed a lot in the middle of the Pla de Beret, with a pleasant weather for the occasion and with a clear message: "The Valley Shouts" to Pau Donés. Soon we will be able to enjoy the video clip!
But not only music accompanied Baqueira Beret, but the competition was once again the protagonist throughout the weekend at the Stadium Beret. On 25, 26 and 27 March, the U14 and U16 Spanish Alpine Skiing Championships were held. This event also coincided with the celebration of the school nationals for U16 and the 3rd and final phase of the Audi U16/U14 Spanish Cup. The more than 280 skiers of the U16/14 categories have lived these Spanish Championships with the excitement of qualifying and being able to finish this season with good results. They have been held in the Aranese resort and have been scoring for the third and final phase of the Copa España Audi U16/U14 2022. The Baqueira Beret resort, the Club Aranés d'Esports d'Iuèrn (CAEI), Club d'Esquí Val d'Aran (CEVA), Copos Skiclub, Ainhoa Ibarra Ski Club and Montanha Aran Club (MAC), as well as the Federació Catalana d'Esports d'Hivern (FCEH) and the Real Federación Española Deportes de Invierno (RFEDI) have collaborated in the organisation of the event. These same competitions are valid for the Spanish school championships promoted by the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD) for the U16 category.
The first day of the competition included a visit from the skier Quim Salarich, the revelation of Spanish skiing, who accompanied the future promises of alpine skiing. The youngsters were able to share with him and his teammate and Val d'Aran local, Álex Puente, an exciting day for them, after asking for advice and being close to what is already a hero for a whole generation.
Undoubtedly a weekend of lots of snow, lots of music and lots of fun for everyone, just a few days before the end of the 2021-2022 season in Baqueira Beret, which continues with good conditions to enjoy alpine skiing, snowboarding or Nordic skiing in its extensive facilities and with forecasts of upcoming snowfalls.
